Stop the Presses: Avoiding the Most Common Invitation Mistakes

Once you’ve made the commitment to each other and committed to a wedding date, you’re going to want to pick out your invites….and you want them to be well, inviting.
Here are a few common mishaps to steer clear of:
1. Busy Stationery: We ALL have multiple sides to our personalities but not everyone can or should be included on your invites. Pick a theme (just one) and stick with it, from beginning to end. If you’re hosting a beach bash…then make THAT your central focus, regardless of the fact that you may also want elements of nostalgia or boho chic in your celebration. Keep invites simple and sophisticated and remember that when it comes to your wedding day design, less is often more.
2. Grammer Gafs: I’ve done it myself with personalized Christmas cards…so I KNOW firsthand that spelling mistakes are easy to miss. As the “author” of the text you know and can visualize what you want to say, so minor mistakes. Your best line of defense…put down your draft for a day or two then take another CLOSE look at it. It’s also wise to secure the services of a second and even a third pair of eyes.
3. Handwriting Addresses: These can be a long and laborious task which means you may make mistakes or your handwriting may suffer. Consider have your stationary supplier addressing the envelopes (PROFESSIONALLY) for you.
4. Untimely Errors: Giving guests too much time to RSVP can be a disaster as most potential guests may wait until the last minute to send out their response. You, on the other hand want to know how many you will have in attendance and how many you will need to budget for. Make sure you place a deadline on your response cards, one you are comfortable with and that will allow you plenty of time to plan your big day.
5. The Long and Short of It: Ordering either too many or not enough invites can cause undue stress, and possibly an un-necessary expense. Figure out how many households you will be mailing to and how many invites to each household BEFORE you order. Just make sure you DO have some extras just in case. And, you’ll want to send out as soon as possible, giving guests enough time to reply and to have enough time to resend any invites that may get damaged or lost in the mail.
6. Sticky Situations: Rather than purchasing stamps in bulk, consider weighing your invite FIRST. After all you don’t want to have to add postage to your invites or have them returned.
